Reflections of a Productive and Fulfilling Week

It’s been 3 full weeks now since I quit my job to follow my dream of running my own business. I originally had plans to write daily about what I was doing with the business but have since realized daily isn’t really realistic. It takes time to sit and write about what I’m doing and that’s time I need to be putting into the business. On top of that, some days I don’t have a lot to share about what I’m doing because not a lot is happening. I thought I would be accomplishing a lot each day but that’s just not reality. Reality is I might only get to work on one thing because that one thing takes a lot longer then I thought it would. So I’ve decided instead to give weekly updates. These updates I’m doing mostly for me as a way of holding myself accountable for what is happening and also as a way to keep track of what I’m doing and when and what the result is of it. However, I know that what I’m doing can help others with their businesses and how they think about them, so for that reason I want to share this experience too.

So how productive have I been the past few weeks? Well let’s see:

  • I’ve added some much needed content to our business website (www.supremerenovationsllc.com).
  • I’ve worked on improving follows on Facebook.
  • I’ve started the process to get us accredited with the BBB. All that’s left is to pay the membership fee.
  • I’ve started the process to get us added to Home Advisor.
  • I’ve updated our project management system.
  • I’m currently working on updating our accounting system.
  • I’ve started to write down our company processes but need to flush them out in full detail.
  • I’ve come up with some new marketing ideas.

I’m actually shocked at how long it took me to accomplish some of those tasks. Such as the website, it took me days to work on it when I I thought it would only take me a few hours. The BBB was also something that took some time because you have to fill out an online application and do a phone interview. The rest didn’t take too long but it still took time.

I’ve started to get into a good routine this week though. My morning are so much more relaxed now which seems to help my creative side come out. I feel much more productive when I do work now. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that when I’m working, I’m fully focused. Before I would be more focused on getting done quickly and getting the day over with.

I don’t sit and work all day like I would at a 9-5 but I don’t feel like I have too as long as I’m being productive and getting stuff accomplished. It’s such a weird feeling to know it’s ok if I don’t work all day because there’s a good chance I’ll want to work on something at night. Heck, there’s a good chance I’ll work on the weekend too. That’s the upside and downside to being your own boss but honestly I love it. It’s a really great feeling to want to work. I want my business to be successful which makes me want to work. Not to mention, it’s such a good feeling to get stuff done that I know does matter and does help my company. I like knowing I’m making a difference for us.

Since I’m not a trained bookkeeping/accounting specialist, I’ve started to do my own research on how to keep proper books and how to generate accounting reports. I’m currently reading a book called Financial Intelligence for Entrepreneurs: What You Really Need to Know About the Numbers

Financial Intelligence book

I’m not far into this book yet, only 1/4 of the way through it but I’ve already learned so much. Accounting was always hard for me to grasp. I’m great with keeping up with Cash Flow but not so great at accrual accounting and this book is helping to break it down so it’s easy to understand. It teaches you how to do different reports and what each line item means along with giving plenty of examples. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who own their own company or wants to understand account better. It truly is a great book!

So Tell Me..
